"We hope there is nothing to do in the disaster area!"

At 10:30 a.m. on December 19, 2023, nine teammates of the Zhejiang RAMS team and two search and rescue dogs set off from Hangzhou to Lanzhou by plane, the mission of the trip is: search and rescue earthquake trapped people. Wang Bin, the captain of the RAMS team, told reporters before departure: "We hope that there is nothing to do in the disaster area! Because as long as we have nothing to do, then the disaster is not so bad!"
At 23:59 on December 18, 2023, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in Dongxiang Sala Autonomous County of Baoan Nationality in Jishishan, Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Linxia, Gansu Province, with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.
The first time after learning the news of the earthquake, Wang Bin, commander of the Ram rescue team in Hangzhou, immediately connected his teammates by phone and began to arrange the deployment of reinforcements. After more than two hours of respective preparation, at 3 o 'clock in the morning on the 19th, Captain Wang convened teammates to carry out a telephone conference to collectively assess and verify the local situation of the earthquake. "What is the geology? What is the current weather and temperature? Is there a mall or school nearby? What is the religion of the local people? And so on, that's all we need to know before we go!" Captain Wang said.
After an all-night preparation and deployment, nine members of the Zhejiang RAMS team, carrying two search and rescue dogs, gathered at 7:30 am and left for the airport. During the arrival of the airport and waiting for the plane, Captain Wang also called the members of the RAMS team in Gansu branch and entrusted the purchase of rescue materials.
At 8:30 p.m. on the 19th, the Zhejiang RAMS team successfully arrived in Jishishan County, Gansu Province. At the same time, the relief materials collected and purchased on the way to the county also reached the local rescue headquarters. After arriving, the RAMS team members had no time to rest, and immediately put into rescue, using search and rescue dogs and life detectors, and began to search and rescue the local collapsed buildings. The local rescue headquarters also distributed the relief supplies brought by the RAMS, including 260 kilograms of mineral water, 100 sets of quilts, 100 heating lamps, 80 boxes of instant noodles and 39 boxes of disinfectant alcohol to the affected people overnight.
"The most difficult part of the rescue process this time was the low temperature and the unstable structure of the houses." Captain Wang told reporters, "The local temperature at night is 15 degrees below zero, which is not only easy for our rescue workers to lose temperature, but also very dangerous for trapped people." Generally, everyone knows that the golden rescue time is 72 hours, but in the case of low temperature, people will lose vital signs in 10 hours, so we have no time to rest, every minute and every second to seize. There is also the local housing structure is basically earth-stone structure, in the case of aftershocks, it is easy to occur secondary collapse. We have to be very careful with every step we step on the building, and with the rain, the search is very slow."
During the rescue process, Captain Wang and the team members took turns, rested for a while in the headquarters tent when they were tired, drank a few mouthfuls when they were thirsty, and ate some compressed biscuits when they were hungry. No one wanted to delay a second more, just wanted to gain more time and have the opportunity to save more lives.
Due to the scarcity of people living in the area, and the timely rescue of local organizations, the RAMS team did not find trapped people in the nearly 24 hours of search and rescue. "We should say that nothing has been achieved in this rescue!" Captain Wang told reporters, "But we are still very happy, because this shows that the disaster is not so serious!" Then, according to the instructions, we started to help residents build shelters!" After regaining their mission, the RAMS helped local residents set up temporary shelters. And in the knowledge that because there is no power, the people in the disaster area can not cover seven or eight quilts at night to keep warm, and quickly raised 30 generators donated to the people in the disaster area to ensure a certain degree of power demand.
According to statistics, the Ram rescue team assessed and searched 40 collapsed houses in the disaster area, and built 45 tents for victims. As of December 21, the Ram Club Public Welfare Foundation, together with all sectors of society, has donated 600,000 yuan worth of living materials to the disaster area. Members of the Zhejiang RAMS team returned safely to Hangzhou on the afternoon of the 21st after completing their scheduled tasks in the disaster area.
